Using License Plate Recognition Technology with Pay-by-License Plate Parking

Pay-by-License Plate (PBL) is a proven parking model that has been in use for many years and is gaining increasing traction in North America. This model is used in conjunction with multi-space parking pay stations and requires parkers to identify their vehicle by its license plate number when purchasing a permit.

PBL is part of a broader concept called License-Plate-Enabled Parking (LEP), an ecosystem of technologies using license plates as the key identifier to access an enhanced parking experience. This white paper discusses the interaction between two LEP components: PBL pay stations and License Plate Recognition (LPR).
